Description

Small fishing and pleasure boat harbor on the southwestern shore of Roskilde Fjord

NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the harbor is only recommended during the day for those unfamiliar with the area. From the shallow buoy "Ægholm", steer a westerly course to the marked passage at "Nørre Rev". The buoys and their lighting are difficult to make out as they are surrounded by gillnets. After the channel with a target depth of 4 m, head for the harbor at 330°.

Berths

The small harbor basin is full of local boats. If you're lucky, you'll find a place. In calm weather, however, you can moor well on the outside of the eastern pier at a water depth of 2 m.

Surroundings

The cozy harbor offers basic sanitary facilities and limited supply options.

NV Land Guide

This tiny harbour with a water depth of 1.5 meters is unfortunately mostly occupied, so that guests either have to go alongside a cutter or use the uncomfortable outer pier in strong easterly winds. The nets and boats of recreational fishermen dominate the picture around the few moorings, as does the "Gershøj Kro", whose guests enjoy an excellent view over the harbour and fjord.

The small village, situated on a hill with a row of old thatched-roof houses and a beautiful church, also leaves nothing to be desired in terms of tranquillity. The old structures are better preserved than in most places on Roskilde and Isefjord with their often oversized vacation home areas. There is a petrol station and a grocery store.

The extremely well-kept Krabbesholm Manor, located two kilometers northwest of Gershøj, is well worth a visit. A special feature of the manor house and its outbuildings are the almost black roof tiles, which look as if they have been painted, making the roof appear as a highly polished surface when exposed to the sun. The manor is privately owned and can unfortunately only be viewed from the road.

Selsø, a beautiful anchorage bay with a small jetty, was an insider tip not so long ago.

North of the bay, a narrow road embankment separates the bay from Selsø Lake, a protected, reed-covered body of water that serves as a breeding ground for many birds.

Selsø Church rises above the lake (one kilometer from the jetty) and another 300 meters to the east, on the Hornsherred promontory, stands one of Denmark's oldest manors, Selsø Castle, which was restored in 1973. It can be visited at weekends and on weekdays (1-5 pm) and contains Denmark's oldest manor house kitchen, a fireplace room with wooden benches. The Knights' Hall and the neighboring rooms are still as they were furnished in 1730. Other rooms have remained unchanged since 1800, which may be due to the fact that no "lords" have lived at Selsø Castle for over 170 years. Marbled wall panels 5 meters high, large Versailles mirrors, French wallpaper and huge paintings by Henrik Krock are among the old furnishings. The sparse servants' quarters form a contrast. Old domestic and agricultural tools are on display in the cellar. And in the portal house you can see a former dungeon where rebellious farmers were once locked up.

The aforementioned church can also be visited. Its sights include an altarpiece from 1605 with the coat of arms of the nobility.

Before you head back to your boat, you should stroll through the beautiful park of the castle - and if you have time, take a look at the Selsø Gallery, one kilometer north of the church.

There are only a few houses around the Selsø anchorage. If you want to get supplies, you have to go to the village of Skibby, 5 kilometers to the northwest.
