The approach is possible day and night and takes place via the very well buoyed and lighted "Rudkøbing Løb" fairway. However, you should be aware of the current, which is sometimes very strong across the entrance and can run right into the harbor basin (for more information on the current, see NV. Sport Navigation Chart S 12B).

Berths

Guests will find berths in the marina at a water depth of 2 - 2.5m. Large yachts are moored alongside on the north-western breakwater or in the southern basin of the commercial harbor. The fishing port is not suitable for guest moorings and the ferry port is closed to pleasure craft.

The capital of the island is also the only town on Langeland. Rudkøbing celebrated the 700th anniversary of the granting of its town charter as a market town in 1987. Although the town and its market rights are older than 700 years, its privileges as a market town were confirmed in 1287. However, 700 years ago, many farmers and traders on the island did not like the trade monopoly at all, because their business was also running without the privileged Rudkøbing. They did not see the point of having to sell and ship their goods in Rudkøbing. Why expose themselves to the dangers of the medieval town - expensive living, plague, cholera, famine, fires - if there was no tangible reason to do so? After all, there were plenty of other ports available for exporting goods, such as Bagenkop and Lohals. The fact that it was forbidden, under penalty of punishment, to let business pass Rudkøbing was of little concern to the rural population, especially as shipping in the monopoly port was more expensive than in the pirate ports.

The monopoly decreed from above probably also played a decisive role in the disputes between the supporters of the royal house and the North Schleswig ducal family in the 13th century. In 1280, open warfare broke out between King Erik Klipping and his half-cousin, Duke Valdemar IV of North Schleswig. The duke was finally imprisoned at Søborg Castle and only released after swearing fealty. He must not have been too serious about his oath, because on November 22, 1286, the king was murdered by masked men in the village barn of Finderup. Although Imperial Marshal Stig and a number of other high-ranking noblemen were found guilty of murder and ostracized, the main suspect, Waldemar, was among the judges. The Dowager King had offered him the position of Imperial Governor. As such, it was of course his "most noble" task of tracking down the murderers. As a result of the aristocratic horse-trading, which apparently took place behind the scenes, the widow succeeded in having her underage son Erik proclaimed king, and the imperial administrator Waldemar succeeded in underpinning Rudkøbing's privileges. On September 29, 1287, Rudkøbing's town privileges were confirmed in the Knights' Hall at Tranekær Castle.

The Langelanders proved united against the Swedes, who tried in vain to take the island three times during the 1658/59 war. However, the islanders felt the full fury of the attackers after the fourth attempt was successful. Half of Rudkøkbing was destroyed. The town had already been so badly damaged by a fire 40 years earlier that the renewed destruction left it permanently impoverished. As a result, it still has no castles or other magnificent buildings. It was only with the construction of the port in the 19th century that things began to pick up again.

Although it lacks splendor and grandeur, Rudkøbing still has a town center with old half-timbered and merchant houses that is well worth seeing. The old pharmacy in Bogade 15 between the market and the harbor is part of the dreamy old town. Here you will find three centuries of pharmacy inventory, all of which has been used on the spot. The contents that used to be in the drawers are, of course, less in demand today: dragon's blood, crab's eyes, a mummified mummy or live leeches. Medicinal herbs were grown for centuries in the listed garden next to the pharmacy.

The Langeland Museum of Cultural History at Jens Wintersvej 12 is dedicated to the history of the islands of Langeland and Strynø. The exhibition includes an extensive prehistoric collection, which is also the result of excavations on Langeland. This museum is considered one of the best in Denmark when it comes to antiquities. Tasteful pieces of furniture from numerous manor houses on the island from the period after 1600 are on display. Magnificent silver-studded weapons and riding equipment come from Viking graves.

Of course, the inviting building at Østergade 25 is of particular interest to pleasure boaters, as it houses a small fishing and seafaring exhibition. In addition to old fishing gear and fishermen's dinghies, the photographic material deserves special attention. It includes a large number of old ship photographs and thus documents the early working conditions. The everyday life of the seamen, their leisure activities and their food are described in detailed reports. Also at Østergade 25, an exhibition at the Langeland Museum shows how people used to live. For example, a 17th century-style living room is on display.

In the middle of the town, between Smedegade to the north and Brogade to the south, lies Rudkøbing Church, which consists of a late Romanesque nave with a Gothic sacristy and late Gothic cross arm. Remains of a wall made of unhewn boulders can be seen in the western part of the country house, probably the remains of the first church, which was probably built around 1100.

The construction of the Catholic church, established in 1925 in a converted town house, can be traced back to Polish foreign workers who came to Langeland at the beginning of the century to work in beet cultivation. The remarkable windows of the chapel are a glass mosaic with motifs from the story of Christ.

The large Rudkøbing town mill, built in 1820, belongs to a foundation that was set up to preserve it. The surrounding landscape can be seen from the mill hill.

Tullebølle lies between Rudkøbing and Tranekær and is the only Danish village with two well-preserved old windmills - Bjerreby Mill and Bagenbjerg Mill, which was still in operation until 1981. With eleven preserved mills, Langeland is still a small mill paradise today. If you want to know more about the history of mills, the best place to visit is the mill museum in Tranekær Castle Mill (see Dageløkke). The village of Tullebølle has a church worth seeing and the Tullebölle Kro, an old stagecoach inn.

For nature lovers, a hike or drive to Lindelse Nor south of Rudkøbing is recommended. A hiking trail leads from Lindelse via Bodden, Bogøvej, Langøvej and Kædabyvej.

From Rudkøbing there is a ferry to Strynø.
