The approach via Horsens Fjord is unproblematic day and night thanks to good lighting.

Berths

Guests will find free berths in both marinas at 1.6 - 2.5m water depth. Large yachts can also moor in the very interior of the commercial harbour, in "Gamle Havn". Here you can moor in a typical harbour environment very close to the city centre.

Surroundings

Limited utilities. From the marina it is about 30min walk to the town centre.

The fjord town is the birthplace of Vitus Bering, the naval officer in Russian service who explored the coast of Siberia around 1700 and discovered the waterway named after him between the continents of Asia and America. In Vitus Bering Park, a small green area near the railway station, a commemorative plaque has been erected in memory of the city's famous son (1681 to 1741). The two cannons flanking the plaque come from the sailing ship "St. Peter"", with which Bering undertook his last voyage in 1741. He was stranded on an uninhabited island and died of scurvy. The cannons are a gift from the Soviet Union. Apart from the memorial plaque, there are several bronze sculptures with different motifs in Bering Park, including the sitting girl by Gerhard Hennings.

In this very lively commercial and industrial city of around 50,000 inhabitants, a number of old merchants' houses from the 18th century are still standing - especially in Søndergade, which is also the widest main street in the Danish province. Perhaps the most magnificent baroque building is at Søndergade 17: Palais Lichtenberg, built in 1744. The massive sandstone entrance portal was carved by the leading stonemason of the 18th century, Didrick Gercken. Under the old vaults in the cellar of the Palais is a cosy restaurant. Another outstanding baroque building is the Helms Pharmacy in Søndergade. In Nørregade and on Aaboulevard are the representative patrician houses from the city's heyday. While the richest citizens of the city lived here, the poorer craftsmen and day labourers were left with the cross streets Thobogade, Graven and Fugholm.

One of the most recently created monuments to the old merchant class before industrialisation is the town hall in Søndergade. It was built in the Renaissance style in 1854. Many of Horsens' architectural treasures go back further. For example, King Waldemar the Victor is probably the builder of the 12th century Vor Frelsers Kirke, a unique brick building for its time. Probably the most beautiful work in the interior of the church is the sermon seat (around 1600) with scenes of the Passion of Christ. The lavishly decorated monastery church at Borgergade - the preserved remains of a Franciscan monastery - is also worth a visit. The church's rich furnishings bear witness to the town's once very prosperous merchant class.

The town's electricity works, built in 1906, is a workers', craftsmen's and industry museum. It is the only museum of its kind in Denmark. Here, old workshops are used to demonstrate the working world after the Industrial Revolution. The machines are in operation. An old lithographic printing works and an old brewery are also housed in the old power station. The museum tour includes a visit to one of the small workers' houses built when industrialisation was still in its infancy. The creation of workers' housing estates with small house gardens was considered a revolutionary achievement by industrial companies at the time.

The Horsens Museum in Sundvej displays decorative pieces from historic buildings that have since been demolished, and also has a collection of antiquities and has an important art collection. The city's newest museum is the Lunden Art Museum on Sundvej.

Horsens has the largest parks in Denmark relative to its population. Bygholm Park to the west of the railway station, for example, is perfect for walks, including to the ruins of Eric Menved's 13th-century castle. Today's Bygholm Parkhotel was a royal castle in the 14th century and later the seat of various noble families.

By the way, the fjord of Horsens is called the prettiest fjord in Denmark by the poet Acton Friis.
