Navigation
The first time you visit the harbour, you should do so in good daylight and with the sun behind you. Coming from the north, keep 0.5 - 1.0 nm north of the archipelago until you can sight the strait between Altarholmen and Blysundsholmen at 180°. Then steer course 180° into the strait until you are in the immediate vicinity of Blysundsholmen. When passing through the narrows, you should keep closer to Blysundsholmen, as it is deep here. There can be strong currents, mostly to the north. After the narrows, you have to keep to the white marks at about 275°. From the south you have to keep clear of Stigbergsholmen (not included in the plan) until you reach the small skerry off Blysundsholmen at about 010°. Keep heading for the skerry and pass it close to starboard. Then keep towards the narrows between Altarholmen and Blysundsholmen until you can keep towards the white marks at about 275°.
Berths
There are several berthing options in the sheltered bay: At A you can lie very well, but it has only a water depth of 1,5 m. There is room for 1 - 2 boats there. The bay at B is deeper and larger, but the entrance is difficult. There is no protection from wind from directions between south and northwest. In the narrows between Altarholmen and Klädesskär there can be several boats at C with a draught of up to 2 metres. On the west side of the island between Altarholmen and Blysundholmen there is direct mooring and shelter in easterly winds (D). In the narrows between Altarholmen and Blysundsholmen you can moor at E. The place is deep, but only protected from easterly winds.
Surroundings
Altarholmen offers beautiful nature and rich bird life. With a fresh westerly wind, the spectacle of the choppy seas on the west side of the island is fantastic. The island, which was a pilot and sea rescue station until 1903, has an interesting and sometimes dramatic history, about which a plaque at the old pilot harbour A provides information.
