Navigation

The approach is via Guldborgsund or from the south via the Gedser fairway (Rødsand Rende). Coming from the south, turn west in front of the ferry port into the buoyed but unlighted fairway,  past "Kroghage Pynt". A searchlight is required at night. The minimum depth is 4.5m. In strong winds, a strong current must be expected here.

You should also be aware of the heavy ferry traffic, which has absolute right of way when turning off "Rødsande Rende", as well as during entry and exit.

The fishing port to the east of the ferry jetties may only be called at by yachts in an emergency or if the marina cannot be called at for weather reasons (water depth 4 m).

Boring, uninteresting, desolate: this is how Gedser is seen by many a sports sailor. The ferry town is certainly not particularly exciting, but there are a few nice things about it.

For example, there is the hike to the lighthouse, which is located around four kilometers southeast of Gedser on the Gedser Odde headland. From the 26-metre-high tower, you can even see as far as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and overlook the large harbour area on a clear day. When the tower first showed the way in 1802, a coal fire was still burning here in a closed iron lantern. It was not until 1834 that the light was fitted with a reflector and was then extended several times. The lighthouse, which has been automated since 1967, is open to visitors from April to October from 10 a.m. until one hour before sunset.

If you walk along the small road from the lighthouse to the cliffs, you will reach the southernmost point in Denmark. The stony beach at the foot of the cliffs is a popular spot for amber hunters (see also Rødby).

On the beautiful hiking route to the lighthouse and cliffs, you will pass "Drejergården". In the "Trædjeri" halfway between the village and the lighthouse, the wood-turning trade is still practiced in an old farmhouse. The owners of the workshop try to combine traditional work with modern design.

The woodwork can be viewed every day in the workshop. Arts and crafts can also be seen at Amtsvejen 79 in Gedser. Ceramic products are the focus of this small exhibition.

The church in Gedser is worth a visit for its unadorned architecture, both inside and out. A stone is missing from the masonry of the church, which was built in 1915. The reason: an old legend tells that on the day a church is completed in Gedser, a flood washes away the entire town. As long as one stone is missing, the builders told themselves, the church is not finished.

Today, ferries from Rostock enter the town's harbor, which still consisted of just a few houses and farms in the early 1800s. But with the construction of the railroad line and the establishment of a steamship connection to Germany in 1886, Gedser grew considerably. The railroad ferry, which went into service in 1903, provided a further boost. Originally, Gedesby, around five kilometers to the north, was the starting point for shipping connections to Warnemünde and Rostock for centuries. On old maps, Gedesby's harbor entrance is not marked to the west, but to the east. The ships passed through a narrow channel into a huge noor that reached to the east side of Gedesby. Gedesby was therefore the only land connection to the north of the island of Falster.

Over the centuries, the large expanse of water was gradually dyked until the inland lake finally disappeared completely. If you look back even further in the island's history book, South Falster consisted of three islands: Langø, Bøtø and Bøtøfang. Around 1520, King Christian II recruited Dutchmen to carry out the first containment measures. They initially succeeded in containing the water in the aforementioned Noor, but the Baltic Sea was not so quick to comply. It took centuries before the landowners and farmers managed to gain ground by building dykes and canals. The great storm surge of 1872 also undid much of this.

Today, the small village of Gedesby with its idyllic church, village pond, thatched half-timbered houses and old mill is well worth a visit. It is only about three kilometers from the marina. On the way there, you will pass a large first-generation wind generator on the west coast. The decommissioned "monster" is a kind of monument to this form of energy generation, which is now widespread in Denmark. In the same direction, just 1.3 km from the harbor, is the Lolland-Falster Museum, which offers exhibitions and activities.

If you have moored your yacht in the fishing harbor, you can buy fresh fish and smoked fish at the source. There is a grocery store right next to the marina where you can buy the essentials in high season.

Ruhigen Platz am Steg der Dauerlieger bekommen, Sanitär sauber, aber alt (Duschen kostet, Karte muss gekauft werden), Kaufmannsladen 7 Minuten zu Fuß vom Hafen entfernt, gute Busanbindung um zu den Städten zu kommen, schöne Gegend rundum

Leider ist der Leuchtturm privat und kann nicht besichtigt werden. Die Wanderung zum südlichstem Punkt Dänemarks lohnt aber dennoch! Toller Blick und schönes Baden.

Netter Hafen mit nettem Personal. Im Hafen gibt es eine Pizzaria, gute Sanitäranlagen, einen großen und guten Kinderspielplatz, Grillmöglichkeiten. Der Kaufmann im Ort ist fußläufig, besser ist es aber mit dem Fahrrad.

Toller Hafen mit gutem Schutz bei Süd bis Ost. Am 13.03. ist hier aber noch Winterschlaf.

Hübscher Yachthafen, bei starken westlichen Winden kann Einfahrt und können die Pfahlboxen problematisch werden. Das Spaßbad und er Ferienpark sind offenbar insolvent. Der Ort selbst hat den Charme vergangener Größe und Bedeutung.

Ruhiger Hafen am Rand von Gedser...die Anfahrt von Westen her von den beiden Windparks ist spektakulär.
