The marina of the local sailing club is located south of the bascule bridge in the small harbor town on the Schlei.

In the summer months, the bascule bridge is opened every hour from 5:40 a.m. to 9:40 p.m. Caution: Pay attention to the current when approaching the berths across the fairway.

Increased traffic volume during the bridge opening (15 minutes before the hour).

Guests will find places at a water depth of 2 - 3 m after consultation with the harbor master. Mooring on the outside of the marina is not permitted for "shipping police" reasons.

Here, pleasure craft have right of way over motorists every hour when the bascule bridge built in 2003 is put into operation. The harbor is also dominated by old silos and the last fish smokehouse in Kappeln. The letters "A-A-L" on the three smokehouse chimneys tell everyone from afar what is smoked here apart from sprats, halibut and mackerel.

Right next to the bridge, the town has something unique in Europe: the last completely intact herring fence. Such fences used to make herring fishing much easier, but icy winters repeatedly destroyed the netting and modern fishing methods prevailed over the years. The constantly maintained Kappeln herring fence is said to date back to the 15th century. Unfortunately for the sailors, these fishing fences not only put fish on the table every day, but also caused the Schlei to silt up. Despite the declining water quality, herring are still fished out of the Schlei en masse, as can easily be seen from the restaurant menus. If you can't get enough of herring, we recommend the Kappeln Herring Days, an annual town festival that lasts four days from Ascension Day.

Because of its sheltered, favorable location on the Baltic Sea, Kappeln was once a flourishing trading and fishing port that experienced its heyday in the 18th century. Agricultural products from Angeln and Schwansen were mainly loaded here. Every summer, the pedestrian zone is bustling with activity, where numerous tourists go on a shopping spree. There are also narrow alleyways and stairways in the city center as well as tastefully restored old houses.

One of the city's sights is the 30-metre-high mill, which was rebuilt in Dutch style after a fire and towers over the city together with the Nikolaikirche church. The Kappeln mill is the tallest in Schleswig-Holstein.

Originally built in 1888, the massive structure was planned so high by the owner at the time so that the buildings surrounding the mill could not block the wind. After all, the nine-storey building had a diameter of 23 meters and a wing cross that could generate 80 horsepower. During the windy period, wind power was not only used to grind grain, but also to saw wood. It was not until 1964 that the mill's blades came to a standstill. The mill corporations had bought up the services of the small mills and the millers had to agree to stop producing flour in return. The great mill extinction began. Of the 15 windmills that used to be visible from the tour of the Kappeln mill, only a few still exist.

Today, the town's tourist office is housed on the second floor. The wedding room on the third floor is now so well-known that couples from all over Germany say "I do" there. The historic building is also used for temporary exhibitions.

Two other attractions in the city are located close together on the quay south of the bascule bridge: The museum railway station and the museum harbor. The Angeln steam railroad runs from here on its home line to Süderbrarup. The beautiful landscape between Kappeln and Süderbrarup alone is worth the trip in the old steam locomotive carriages. As a sports sailor, you certainly won't want to miss a visit to the still young museum harbour.

Kappeln probably originated in the Viking Age around 900. The settlement is first mentioned in documents in connection with a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas, the forerunner of today's Nikolaikirche. The name Kappeln is also derived from the chapel.

The interior of the mighty Nikolai Church, which towers high between old houses, is characterized by a colossal neoclassical architectural style. In contrast, the church's jewel, a side altar by Hans Gudewerth the Younger from 1641, looks modest.

Prima Hafen, Dank Bezahlautomat kommt man jetzt auch außerhalb der Dienstzeit vom Hafenmeister an den Code für die Waschräume.

Fast direkt in der Stadt und trotzdem ruhig. Sehr moderne saubere sanitäre Anlagen. Wir haben hier eine Starkwindphase abgewettert und bekamen von den 30 Knoten Wind aus westlichen Richtungen fast nichts mit. Das Restaurant TAUWERK direkt am ASC hat uns in Sachen Lage, Service und Qualität der Speisen sehr gefallen. Bäckerei Günter am Stadthafen war gut für ein Frühstück mit frischen Brötchen. Schöner Wanderweg an der Schlei entlang nach Arnis (4km) direkt vom Hafen. Achtung, die Querströmung beim An- und Ablegen unbedingt beachten. Wir haben in zwei Tagen hier etliche unsanfte Anlegemanöver gesehen;-)
