In Kappeln, pleasure boaters have right of way over motorists every hour when the bascule bridge built in 2003 is put into operation. The harbor is also dominated by old silos and Kappeln's last fish smokehouse. The letters "A A L" on the smokehouse's three chimneys reveal from afar what is smoked here alongside sprats, halibut and mackerel.

Right next to the bridge, the town has something unique in Europe: the last completely preserved herring fence. In the past, such fences facilitated herring fishing, but icy winters repeatedly destroyed the netting, and over the years modern fishing methods prevailed. The Kappeln herring fence, which has always been preserved, is said to date back to the 15th century. Unfortunately for the skippers, these fences not only put fish on the table every day, but also caused the Schlei to silt up. Despite the declining water quality, herring are still fished out of the Schlei in large quantities, as you can easily see from the restaurant menus. If you can't get enough of herring, we recommend the Kappeln Herring Days, an annual town festival that lasts four days from Ascension Day.

Due to its sheltered, favorable location on the Baltic Sea, Kappeln was once a flourishing trading and fishing port that experienced its heyday in the 18th century. Agricultural products from Angeln and Schwansen were mainly loaded here. Every summer, the pedestrian zone is bustling with activity and many tourists go shopping here. There are also narrow alleyways and stairs in the city center as well as tastefully restored old houses.

One of the city's sights is the 30-metre-high mill, which was rebuilt in Dutch style after a fire and towers over the city together with St. Nicholas Church. The Kappeln mill is the tallest in Schleswig Holstein.

Originally built in 1888, the massive structure was planned so high by the builder at the time that the surrounding buildings were unable to keep the wind out. After all, the building's nine-storey winged cross produced 80 hp with a diameter of 23 meters. During the windy period, wind power was not only used to grind grain, but also to saw wood. It was not until 1964 that the mill's blades came to a standstill. The mill corporations had bought up the services of the small mills, and in return the millers had to agree to stop producing flour. The great mill extinction began. Of the 15 mills that could once be seen from the Kappeln mill tour, only a few remain.

Today, the town's tourist office is located on the second floor. The wedding room on the third floor is now so well-known that couples from all over Germany say "I do" there. The historic building also hosts temporary exhibitions.

Two other attractions in the city are located close to each other on the quay south of the bascule bridge: The museum train station and the museum harbor. From here, the Angeln steam train runs on its main line to Süderbrarup. The beautiful landscape between Kappeln and Süderbrarup alone is worth the trip on the old steam locomotives. As a sports sailor, you will certainly not want to miss a visit to the still young museum harbour.

Kappeln is thought to have originated in the Viking Age around 900. The settlement is first mentioned in documents in connection with a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas, the forerunner of today's Nikolaikirche. The name Kappeln is also derived from the chapel.

The mighty Nikolaikirche, which towers high between old houses, is characterized by a colossal classicist architectural style on the inside. In contrast, the church's jewel, a side altar by Hans Gudewerth the Younger from 1641, appears modest.
