Information

The water depths in the gat are very variable, so that the buoyage as well as the course of the fairway must be constantly adjusted and can therefore deviate from the charted position (see also latest reports at nvcharts.com or in the NV Charts App or official announcements). The tidal current sets on the outside of the islands roughly parallel to the coast at speeds of up to 1.5 knots. Much higher - up to 3.5 kn - is the current speed in the gat. Here the tidal current sets in or out, depending on the tide. In onshore winds, swells, especially when the tide is running out (wind against current), there is often high and dangerous swell with breaking waves in the gat, making any passage impossible. During storms, strong ground swells can occur in some gats during both incoming and outgoing tide. Particularly at high water levels, the current often sets across the cours line, both within the fairways and across the sands.
