Description

The Fortica fortress is very well preserved and is one of the most beautiful city fortresses on the Croatian coast because of its picturesque location.
Today it houses a restaurant and a museum with a collection of amphorae and other exhibits from ancient and medieval times.
The magnificent panoramic view of the city and the "Hell Islands" (Pakleni Islands) is definitely worth the trip.

The foundation stones are located on an ancient defensive structure from the 1st millennium BC, they protected the Illyrian settlement on the hillside. In the course of late antiquity, a Byzantine fortress was located here, probably built by Emperor Justitian in the 6th century, traces can be seen on the southern wall.
In 1282, the present fortress was built under Venetian rule, numerous reconstructions followed, financed from the proceeds of salt sales.
In 1551 the fortress was finished, as testified by the Venetian national coat of arms.
In the 14th century Spanish army engineers worked on the fortress and gave it the name "Spanjola".
