Description

The Stari Grad with the plain in the north of the island of Hvar is an agricultural landscape, which was laid out in the 4th century BC by Greek colonists and is still used in the same form today. The stone walls and stone sheds have been preserved for over 24 years along with the water system. The fields are still cultivated with the same crops, mainly grapes and olives, the area is a protected example of the ancient Greek agricultural system that is still intact and used today. The land is divided into geometrical plots (chora) bordered by dry stone walls and has a rainwater - recovery system through gutters and cisterns. The original field division has been respected by the continuous maintenance of the boundary walls by subsequent generations. The "Stari Grad Plain" (Old Hrad Plain) and the village of Strari Grad are UNESCO World Heritage Site and the 7th in Croatia.
