Description

Vela Luka is located on the Zaljev Vela Luka a wide, large bay at the western end of the island. The place is ferry port to Split and Lastovo. 
Vela Luka means large port, the  inhabitants of Blato, the place is located above in the mountains, built here a loading port for wine and olive oil. 
From this developed in the last 100 years a picturesque small town, which lives from agriculture, wine production, olive cultivation, shipbuilding and of course from tourism.

The city is relatively new for Croatia, with some rows of houses from the 19. Jhr, a palm-lined waterfront and beautiful location on the most forested, of the  Croatian islands. 
The surrounding hills protect the town from the north and south winds and the climate is typically Mediterranean.
In Vela Luka there was a rare meteorological event in 2014 - a meteorological tsunami, when the water level rose by about 1.50m in a very short time.
