Description

Vela Spila is located here on the southern slope of the mountain Pinski Rat, one of the most important prehistoric cave dwellings Europe.

The cave gives archaeologists insight into life in the Mediterranean from the Mesolithic and the Neolithic life in this region. Carbon dating has shown that there was human activity dating back 20 000 years. The findings can be seen in the Cultural Center in Vela Luka. The cave measures about 1500 square meters and is located over 200m above the bay of Vela Luka.

You can see across the bay to Hum Hill (376m) with the Austro-Hungarian fortress "Forteca" built in the 19th century.
