Description

The old village of Susak with its narrow streets and canobas is also a popular summer destination. A small percentage of the population lives on the island all year round, and by the mid-1960s Susak was almost completely depopulated. Today tourism is the main income, but some wine is also produced - red wine and dry rosé.
Several hundred tourists visit the island every day. A boost to Susak's tourism is the Susak Expo - an annual international art event that attracts contemporary artists and in recent years has almost a reputation like the Venice Biennale.
Susak was probably ruled in the 10th and 11th centuries by Croatian King Krešimir who allowed Benedictine monks to build an abbey on Susak. The Benedictine monks ruled Susak until about 1267, when Susak was ceded to the Venetians. The monastery was in operation until 1770 when the church of St. Nicholas was built.
