At this wide bay of the Adriatic Sea there was already a Mycenaean
settlement 3.000 years B.C., tools from the Bronze Age have been
found here and in ancient times there was a harbour town under the
name of Chaonia, in 551 A.D. the place was invaded by
Ostrogoths.
In the early 19th century during the reign of Ali Pasha there was a small settlement next to the harbour. After the Ottoman administrative reform of 1867 Sarandë was founded and in the late Ottoman period until the Balkan wars (1912-1913) it consisted only of a port.
