Description

The area around Petrovac has been settled since the Roman times, here the trade route that passed through the mountains came to the coast and so a town developed.
Ruins from the Roman times were found behind the church of St. Ilija, a mosaic floor from the 4th century and ruins of a villa with baths.  Later there was a Slavic village. Under Venetian rule, the fortress "Kastel Lastva" was built at the northern end of the bay on a natural, wide rocky breakwater in the 16th century, as a protection against pirates.
The place was called Kaštel Lastva until the 20th century, when King Peter I Karađorđević (1844-1921), the last king of Serbia, changed the place name to Petrovac.
