Information

The Havel lowlands between Rathenow and Havelberg are an important polder and flood area, which relieve the Elbe during extreme floods. Not least for this reason, the largest European river restoration project was carried out here. In the long term, the Havel is to develop again into a flowing watercourse with near-natural dynamics and the river landscape into a natural wetland. The economic use of the watercourse has been restricted, but gentle tourism is desired. Since 2005, only pleasure boats, passenger ships and hotel ships with a maximum length of 42 m are allowed to operate here. Through traffic for cargo ships is closed. Freight ships are only allowed to enter the port of Rathenow from the south.

Between km 112 and km 144, there are protected wetlands of international importance on both sides of the Havel. They are subject to the strictest nature conservation regulations. You can find out about these areas in a permanent exhibition at the Parey Nature Conservation Centre. (Parey see UH 10).
