Informatie

Current lock status is published here: https://nok-wsa.de/?lang=en

Tips:

Light Signals: A single, interrupted white light (without green/red) means: Entry allowed for pleasure craft!

Mooring and Locking: Fenders must hang very low, almost at the waterline, to prevent slipping out at low floating pontoons.

Life jackets must be worn—especially in the lock, but not exclusively there. Pontoons are slippery, and propeller wash presents an additional hazard.

Waiting Areas
Elbe (Brunsbüttel): East of the old lock and inside on the eastern side.
Kiel: Outside in front of the Tiessenkai, and inside at the waiting pier.

Autopilots must not be used in the canal due to magnetic interference from cables and ships and current from passing vessels.

Passing Ships: Extreme caution is necessary due to pressure and suction effects when passing ships. Keep as far right as possible and maintain safe distance.

Large ships have limited forward visibility—avoid this area and wait patiently for a large enough gap when crossing the fairway.

Locking with Large Ships: Watch for propeller wash of vessels ahead, especially at night. In such cases, ask via VHF on the lock channel whether the propeller is in neutral.
