NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The naval memorial with its height of 72 m is a landmark visible from afar. The harbor lies approx. 0.8 nm to the south. The mill and apartment building serve as landmarks here, but you can only approach them once you have passed Labo beach with the red buoy 6 (Fl.R) in the north or Madsensand with the red buoy 8 (Oc(2)R) in the south. At night, approach the harbor light from the fairway in the white sector.

Attention:
While the ferry is at the pier, entry/exit is prohibited for safety reasons (screw water).

Berths

Free berths are displayed via the Boatpark app and/or allocated by telephone. There are no more green/red signs.

Surroundings

NV Land Guide

Laboe became known as a seaside resort over 100 years ago. It is said that it was mainly wealthy citizens from Kiel who came to the tranquil town of Laboe to take a break from city life. The first holidaymakers were certainly not aware of the tourist hype that now dominates the town on the Kiel Fjord during the summer months. At that time, the landmark that attracts thousands of visitors every year did not yet exist either: the 72-metre-high naval memorial was only inaugurated in 1936. A huge plaque inside the tower, whose shape is reminiscent of a ship's prow, clearly shows the large number of naval soldiers who died at sea during the two world wars. Completed during the National Socialist era, the building is now a memorial to those of all nations who remained at sea and is therefore not just a memorial to the German dead.

The memorial is well worth a visit, the name plaques of the fallen submariners are impressive and the top platform of the memorial is also an excellent vantage point. From a height of 85 m above the water, you can see the Kiel Fjord, the Probstei region, considered the breadbasket of Schleswig-Holstein, and the Baltic Sea all the way to the Danish islands. Conversely, the memorial is an outstanding landmark for seafaring. The submarine from the Second World War on the beach directly in front of the memorial is considered a "technical museum" and has proven to be a magnet for visitors in recent years.

The port of Laboe has remained a lifeline for the town to this day. Fördeschiffe dock in the commercial port every hour, the pilot boats operate from here and the rescue cruiser "Berlin" and the rescue boat "Bottsand" carry out their missions from Laboe harbor. During Kiel Week, Laboe used to be a regular home port for the Folkeboot sailors. Although they still sail on the "Foxtrot" course off Wendtorf, they have to travel there from Schilksee like the other boat classes. However, the "Trudelmauspokal" is still sailed from Laboe on the second weekend in June.

Even the heraldic animal of the Baltic seaside resort has something to do with water. It is a swan. A historical parallel to the heraldic animal is easy to draw. Laboe is said to have been a Slavic fishing village with the name "Lubodne" or "Lyboden" before the 13th century, before it was refounded around 1226 as a possession of the Preetz monastery. The translation of these names is "swan village".

The village was destroyed around 1640 when the Danes and Swedes fought a battle here. Like everywhere else, it was the construction of the harbor that brought better times. It was built in 1850 with the support of the church and quickly became just as important for the transportation of agricultural goods as it was as a fishing port.

The people of Labo owe their marina to the 1972 Sailing Olympics. A reading hall was built on the spa beach. The indoor seawater pool on the beach offers mineral-rich seawater pumped from the fjord at a depth of ten meters. The former customs office is now home to the harbour master's office. Ships of all sizes and nationalities pass close to the spa beach, using the Kiel Canal.

The spa administration invites you to take a "discovery tour" along the beach promenade and provides information about how grandparents used to go on vacation, among other things. The old farming village (Oberdorf) is also part of the discovery tour. The windmill, which can be seen from afar, belongs to a retirement home but can be hired for special occasions. You can take a look at the underwater world of the Baltic Sea at the marine biology station, which is located east of the memorial in the dunes on the beach. Excursions to Kiel, Holtenau, Strande, Schilksee and the other fjord towns can be made on the fjord boats.
