NV Land Guide

This harbor on the southern shore of the Grosse Breite is for those seeking peace and quiet and who love walks. There is only one house at each of the two harbors, otherwise pure nature. The wooded area around Louisenlund Castle, which is now used as a boarding school, to the west of the harbors is particularly suitable for long walks. Towards the east, hikers can expect a more open landscape. Incidentally, this is the widest point of the 40-kilometer-long Schlei. Stretching from north to south, it measures a good four kilometers from shore to shore.

Louisenlund in its current form originated as the summer residence of Landgrave Carl von Hessen-Cassel. The governor of Gottorf Castle, who died in 1836, is also responsible for the large park. At the age of 22, he married Princess Louise, daughter of King Frederick V. His second homeland was Denmark, where he was honored and decorated several times at the court of Christian VII. Among other things, he was appointed Viceroy of Norway. But he "fled" from the intriguing court society and became governor of the duchies. In Louisenlund, he devoted himself to Freemasonry, whose ideals strongly influenced his life. The landgrave had a masonic tower built here, where the meetings of the lodge brothers took place. Only the foundations of this tower remain today. He also took one of the most famous dazzling figures of his time into his service, the Count of St. Germain. He set up a laboratory in the basement of the Masonic tower and tried to extract gold and precious stones from glass. He also wanted to produce a life-prolonging drug. Over time, the experiments became too costly for the Landgrave, and the unsuccessful Count St. Germain died in Eckernförde in 1748, completely impoverished. The landgrave outlived him by 52 years.

The park at Louisenlund was one of the outstanding Nordic parks of the early Romantic era. Today, however, the park has hardly any special features, as many original details have been changed or removed over time.

The village of Fleckeby is a 15-minute walk from the harbor and is an ideal starting point for hikes or bike tours in the Hüttener Berge. The main road 76 connecting Eckernförde and Schleswig runs through the middle of the village, bus connection in both directions from the village center. Gas station, doctors, pharmacy, bakery and grocery store are available. By arrangement, the EDEKA supermarket also delivers goods directly to the ship.
