NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the fired harbour is unproblematic day and night. The approach is westbound to the designated entrance.

Berths

For guest boats there are plenty of berths on pontoons with stern poles, which are marked with green signs. The water depths are 2.5 - 3m.

Surroundings

The modern marina has good services with a boat outfitter (abandoned in 2020, whether successor is still unclear), lounges, guest kitchen and restaurants. Fuel (only petrol) is available at the harbour. Harbour dues, showers and electricity are charged via vending machine card. Further supply possibilities are offered by Aarhus. With NW wind one must count on odour nuisance by the purification plant.

NV Land Guide

The modern marina is a little further from the centre of Aarhus than the North Harbour, but much closer to the parks and forests south of Denmark's second largest city. Mindepark, Marselisborg Skov and Storskov (Skov = forest) form the kilometre-long, green coastal strip, which is an excellent area for hiking and cycling tours - sightseeing included.

The summer residence of the Danish Queen and her family is about a kilometre away from the berth: Marselisborg Castle with a well-kept castle park. When Her Highness is in the castle, she (or rather the castle) is guarded by the bodyguard. The daily shift change at 12 o'clock is prepared for tourists. The absence of the queen means the renunciation of this performance, but as compensation free access to the park, from sunrise to sunset. Not far from the castle, the "Forest Botanical Garden" of Minde Park features rare native plants alongside exotic ones. The 26-hectare Minde Park was established in 1925 by the city of Aarhus as a memorial park with a memorial to the Danish-minded North Silesians who died in the First World War. A game park lies to the southwest of the royal residence, the Scientific and Historical Museum to the west and Aarhus Racecourse to the northwest.

There are opportunities for a rest or a meal at many places in the South Woods, for example at Thors Mølle, the Varna Cafeteria at the Ørnereden Serving Station and Skovmølle near Moesgaard Castle, which is well worth seeing. The distance to the latter in the southern forests is a good five kilometres. It is nevertheless worthwhile to make the journey here (good bus connections), because the MOMU, an ethnographic-archaeological museum of world renown, is located here. In addition to its attractively prepared exhibitions, it impresses not least with its modern architecture.

The ethnographic and archaeological collections, the finds from the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and the time of the Vikings are already impressive.

But far more fascinating is the only completely preserved bog body in Denmark from the Iron Age, the so-called Grey Bale Man. Over the period of 2300 years, the bog preserved him so well that the skin, hair, nails and teeth have hardly suffered. Even the death cut that the victim of a fertility cult received through the neck can still be seen.

The museum in the Herrenhof, which is approached by a magnificent avenue of rowan trees, also includes a several-kilometre-long prehistoric nature trail in the forest of the castle. Its stations include sites from the Bronze and Stone Ages and reconstructions of houses from the Iron and Viking Ages. Detailed descriptions of the museum's exhibitions and the educational trail are available at the museum.

Two sights remain to be mentioned that can be reached quickly from the harbour: "Det danske Brandværnsmuseum" and "Tivoli-Friheden". The fire brigade museum at 56 Daigas Avenue, 500 metres northwest of the harbour, is considered the largest of its kind in the world. The collection includes 80 vehicles, numerous horse-drawn carts, handcarts, a steam fire engine and all kinds of equipment from the past days of the fire brigade, with the oldest fire engine dating back to 1823. The museum, which is housed in a former tram depot, also has play facilities for children (including a small fire engine). Children will have even more fun at the Aarhus Amusement Park, 500 metres further west on the edge of the forest, which offers old-fashioned fairground equipment and artist performances as well as square concerts. Large flowery areas between landscaped ponds are a trademark of the amusement park, which has numerous restaurants, cafés and snack bars. The Marselisborg Hall at Tivoli-Friheden is where the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra gives many of its summer concerts.
