NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

For those not familiar with the area, the approach is only recommended during the day. It takes place from the lighthouse buoy Timmendorf (about 300m southwest of the port) with 55.5 ° directly into the harbor. The entrance tends to silting up. A green buoy marks the limit of the fairway.

Berths

Guest berths at the northern jetty with water and electricity at 2 - 2.5m water depth. The jetties to the east are reserved for passenger ships, fishing and pilot boats and the sea rescue cruiser. In SW winds there is a swell in the harbour - quiet berths are then only available on the southern breakwater.

Surroundings

There are restaurants and limited supply facilities. A sanitary building is located at the northeast corner of the harbour. Information on water depths in the approach is provided by the Wismar Traffic station on VHF channel 12.

NV Land Guide

A lighthouse, a pilot tower and a few houses surround the small cozy harbor of Timmendorf on the island of Poel. If it weren't for the large campsite north of the harbour, Timmendorf could be recommended without reservation as a quiet travel stop in a lonely landscape. But this recommendation is only valid for the pre-season and the post-season, because during the holiday season, a large number of holidaymakers enjoy bathing here. In addition, the island of Poel is a local recreation area for Wismar.

The proximity to the busy campsite, however, brings the advantage of some utilities.

So there is a public toilet, a small post office, a bicycle rental, kiosks as well as snack, ice cream and food stalls. Several cafés and beer gardens are also available and the restaurant at the lighthouse offers a beautiful view over the entrance to Wismar Bay from its terrace.

Hikes along the cliffs south and northeast of Timmendorf are recommended. The Pole beach stretches over seven kilometres from the harbour to the lighthouse on the northern tip of the island. Halfway there, you come to the Black Bush, where a memorial commemorates the deaths of the more than 7000 concentration camp prisoners (see also Neustadt) who perished in the tragic sinking of the "Cap Arkona" and the "Thielbeck". Because the ships were flying the flag of the Reich, they could not be identified by the Allies as prisoner transports. Only a few of the prisoners from the concentration camps survived the bombing raids of the Americans and the British.

From the memorial it is not far to the highest elevation on Poel, the 26-metre-high Kickelberg (see map of the island near Kirchdorf). Also in the south of Poel excellent hiking trails, which lead to the Faulen See and Brandenhusen, invite to excursions. Between Faulem See and Timmendorf lies the nudist beach of the holiday island.
