NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the fired harbour is possible day and night via a designated channel in the leading light (2 F.R) with 297°.

Caution: The sounding passes very close to the southern pier head, so you have to make a small turn here.

The dredging channel has a target depth of 2m, but tends to silt up strongly, the water depth can also be 1.6m. On both sides of the channel the bottom is unclean. There are large unmeasured stones here. This harbour should not be approached in strong onshore winds.

Berths

Guests moor on available, green signposted places in the marina basin. Here you moor at the middle floating jetty in boxes and otherwise with stern moorings. The water depth is about 2.2 m. In the fishing harbour you can moor alongside (by arrangement).

Surroundings

Supplies can be found about 800m from the port in the small village. At the harbour itself, apart from the usual sanitary facilities, there is a restaurant and a small slipway.

Fishermen's huts, the hotel-restaurant "Hamnkrog", a fish shop, a snack bar, a telephone booth, the club house of the sailing club and stony beach characterize the picture at the harbour. Groceries are available in the village.

NV Land Guide

The harbour of this pretty fishing village with its old houses has retained its original appearance. Abbekås and the surrounding area are rich in prehistoric finds.
And both within the village and also further inland there are a number of restaurants and cafes in and around Abbekås. Like the Bongska Huset right at the harbour or the golf club a little further inland.

15 kilometres north of Abbekås lies Svaneholm Castle. It is both a museum and a culinary address. Coins, costumes and weapons are among the old collectibles in the exhibition rooms. For a few crowns you can buy shares in the castle in the museum and - back at home - declare unflinchingly: "I own a part of Svaneholm Castle in Sweden". However, the share is unlikely to amount to much more than one or two bricks.

The menu at "Svaneholms Slott Gästgifveriet" promises exquisite cooking. Juniper sauce, rowan berry jelly, marinated grapes and roast duck are among the dishes served. You can work up an appetite for the delicate dishes by rowing on the castle lake or taking a walk around the lake.

On the way to Svaneholm you pass through the village of Skivarp (three kilometres), whose 12th-century church has vaulted paintings by the Master of Skivarp that are well worth seeing. There is a 16th-century inn opposite the church where you can eat and drink. There is also an old windmill in Skivarp.

Five kilometres northeast of the harbour, a well-preserved rune stone in Östra Vemmenhög reads, translated by scholars as follows: "Bror erected this stone in memory of his brother, a very good man."

A variety of wading birds and sandpipers, which forage in the seaweed on the shore, can be seen around the harbour: The Ruff, the Sickle Sandpiper, the Dunlin, the Icelandic Sandpiper and many more.

Fishermen's huts, the hotel-restaurant "Hamnkrog", a fish shop, a snack bar, a telephone booth, the club house of the sailing club and stony beach characterize the picture at the harbour. Groceries are available in the village.

A monument to the goose "Joakim" has been erected on the quay. Geese have a special meaning here in two ways. Firstly, they are the favourite food of the Skåne people and secondly, the birthplace of Nils Holgersson and his goose is nearby. The children's author Selma Lagerlöf created the world-famous little fellow seven kilometres northwest of Abbekås, in Västra Vemmenhög. This is where his wondrous journey through Sweden on the back of his feathered friend began. The Nils Holgersson statue is dedicated to this event, with Nils Holgersson sitting on his 4m-long goose with a wingspan of 8m at a height of 15m Nils Holgersson. The statue was inaugurated at the national holiday on May 16, 2007. In Västra Vemmenhög you can also see an intact old blacksmith's shop.
