Navigation

EGERNSUND and GRÅSTEN:
The approach is possible day and night, but is restricted by the operating hours of the bascule bridge - 6.30 am to 10 pm - opening of the bridge always hourly minute 15 after.Coming from the Flensburg Fjord, the fairway is well buoyed. First steer with 335° (at night 2 lights in line 2F.R) to the second green fairway buoy (at night: Fl(2)G) and then, following the buoy line, turn to starboard towards the bascule bridge. This has a maximum height of 6 m when closed. The passage of the bridge, which is also lit at night, is 25 m wide. South of the bridge, on the east side, there are piles for mooring during bridge waiting times. (A waiting time of 30 min. is possible until the bridge opens). After passing the bascule bridge, steer past Marina Toft, then round the lighted dolphin (Fl.R) and turn into the fairway of Graasten. From the fairway, the pleasure boater runs towards the moorings as soon as they are across.

Berths

EGERNSUND:
In the narrows of Egernsund there are some private berths which are not very suitable for guests. We therefore recommend to call at Gråsten.
GRÅSTEN:
In Marina Toft guests lie on free places (green signs) on 2,3 - 4m water depth m water depth. The marina is part of Marina Minde.

In Gråsten Sejlklub marina, guest boats are moored, by arrangement on 2 m water depth. On the eastern shore of "Sildekule" in Marina Fiskenæs there are further berths available at 1.5 - 2.6 m water depth. It is a 10-minute walk to the centre of Gråsten.

NV Land Guide

EGERNSUND: From time immemorial a production site for bricks. There were 13 brickworks in Egernsund and Rendbjerg in 1880. The family names indicate that the brick industry attracted many seasonal workers from Poland or Germany who settled here. During the winter, work was suspended because the manufacturing techniques only allowed brick production in the summer. When production was running at full speed, the Ergernsund sailors, who transported the fired clay, were also busy. As soon as they returned to their home port, the next shipload was stowed away, because even the sailors only had a few months between the ice winters to collect their annual earnings. Despite the hurry, the bricks had to be loaded very carefully according to an ingenious system, so that there was no breakage at sea or - which the sailors were particularly afraid of - the cargo slipping. The downside of the job-creating brick industry can be seen everywhere. It left obvious marks on the landscape in its search for usable clay. With the old chimneys of the brickworks still dominating the townscape today, and low houses from earlier days of clay processing, the past is still present in Egernsund. Near the village at Öster-Sottrup, the Nydam boat was found, a Viking ship that is now in Gottorf Castle (see Schleswig). The Nydam Moor was a sacrificial site of the Vikings, where two more ships and weapons from around 500 AD were found before the Danish-Prussian War. However, these two ships are said to have served the Austrians as firewood (!) during the War of 1864. Fortunately, the Nydam boat was not burned up and is today one of the showpieces of the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum of Prehistory and Early History. It was a pure rowing ship of 23 meters length. In the vicinity of Egernsund, Gråsten Castle is a good place to visit (see also Gråsten). It is also possible to cross over from Egernsund to the German side of the Flensburg Fjord.

GRÅSTEN: The town by Nybøl Nor is an attractive place mainly because of the successful combination of old and new architecture. Gråsten's wooded surroundings are also appealing. 700 hectares of trees and one of Denmark's most beautiful beech forests are reason enough to take time out for a walk or a bike ride. The tour to Humlebjerg and the lakes, which all bear the first names of the royal family, is also popular with the local population. Part of the route passes through a wooded valley with a stream. This area of forest is called Gråsten Switzerland. The jewel of the village is the castle, which is surrounded by small lakes. It is a baroque complex that was rebuilt after a major fire in 1757 and can now be visited in parts, unless the royal family is staying at the summer residence. This regulation is also valid for the beautiful English castle park. A popular tourist spectacle at the palace is the daily changing of the guard between 11.30 am and 12 noon.

Under the Grand Chancellor Friedrich Ahlefeldt (1623 to 1686) the noble residence experienced its heyday. He and his sons were Stadtholders in the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein under the Danish King Frederick III. It was also during this time that the precious orangery in the castle garden was built, where the first famous Gråsten Æbler (Gravenstein apples) grew.

The later Duke Christian the Elder liked to see the noble seat serve as a domicile for artists. Thus the poets Jens Baggesen and Hans Christian Andersen were often his guests. Andersen wrote some of his famous fairy tales here.

At the castle's entrance, a monument commemorates Paludan-Müller, chief of the border gendarmerie, who was killed by German soldiers during World War II. Although he fought alone from his official residence against a large superior force, he refused to surrender to the soldiers who wanted to arrest him.

An eye-catcher at Gråsten market is the statue of the Gråsten girl.

If you can make it, you should visit the Ring Rider and Folk Festival on the third weekend of every July.
