Description

Norden is one of the oldest towns in East Frisia. It was first mentioned in documents over 750 years ago. The historic town was an important port until well into the 19th century.

Navigation

Access to the north is initially via Greetsiel, i.e. via the Leysiel lock, then through the reservoir to Greetsiel. Here, you turn northeast into the Störtebeker Canal, where the water depth is approximately 2.5 meters. After about 3 nautical miles, you reach the Westeel lock. You must register for the lock in advance by telephone with the Norden Drainage Association (pumping station). The number of boats that can pass through the lock is limited by the number of berths available in the Norden harbor. The lock chamber has a usable length of 20 m and a width of 9 m. Lockage with additional opening of the bascule bridge at Leybuchtsiel is limited as follows: daily from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and at 5:00 p.m.

In the old harbor basin, the city maintains a floating dock facility for approximately 15 yachts.
